The latest tragedy to hit China’s notoriously deadly coal mine industry- A south-western China coal mine accident killing 14 people.

It was reported that four other people were injusred in the mines “gas outburst”, however, the report did not explain the reasons why this accident occured.  This is not unusual though, because Chinas’ mines are hit frequently with by incidents in which miners choke to death on dangerous gases or in gas explosions.

Nearly 3,800 lives were lost in Chinese coal mines last year, down 20 per cent from the year before, according to government figures.

However, many independent labour groups suspect the actual death toll is much higher, saying many accidents are covered up to prevent costly shutdowns and legal action.
