Gas retail rebates made mandatory by new legislation

The Queensland government have introduced laws which force gas companies to pay a $55 annual rebate to pensioners.

It was discovered that gas retailers had not passed on the agreed rebate to seniors and concession card holders, thus prompting the governments decision to act immediately. At this stage only a draft of the legislation has been made.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson has told Parliament the amendments will ensure the companies do the right thing by their customers.

“The legislation will prohibit gas retailers from providing customer retail services unless they enter into an agreement with the state with a term of at least five years for the provision of agreed community services,” he said.
