Antarctica is to receive 3 wind turbines transported by Meridan Energy, a New Zealand energy company, to help provide power for its researchers.
Company spokeswoman, Claire Shaw, said the turbines will help reduce the use of diesel fuel, but setting them up will be a challenge.
“There’s a lot of major challenges and often its the logistics and the environment that get us and we’re quite happy with the technology, obviously its an isolated continent so we’re going to have some real expert project managers there.”
Australia established wind turbines at its Mawson base in 2005.
