$20m Goulburn pipeline confirmed

A plan to drought-proof Goulburn has resulted in the contribution of $20million by theĀ Federal Government.

Due to the change in government, the Goulburn Mulwaree Council was concerned the money pledged by the Coalition would not be honoured by the new Government.

However, Mayor Paul Stephenson says he has received a letter from Water Minister Penny Wong confirming the Commonwealth’s share of the $50 million project.

Councillor Stephenson says plans for the Wingecarribee to Goulburn pipeline can now move ahead.

“The funding agreements and everything … are ready to sign,” he said.

“Once that happens and a lot of the original groundwork has already been done and where the pipe’s going and the route that it’s going and where it’s coming from and where the pump stations are going - all that works’ already been carried out.

“It’s now finalising the rest of the paperwork and the easements and so forth and it’s away.”

Cr Stephenson says conditions placed on the $50 million project by the previous government will no longer apply.

He says a meeting will still go ahead today with state and federal politicians to detail the plans.

“Why this meeting was put together is that there were some indications that maybe the Federal Government … [wasn't] going to honour what the previous federal government had promised,” he said.

“But … they’ve come to the fore and said ‘yes we’re going to do it’ and they’ve even given us a bit better deal than we’ve had previously.”
