Honda has come out ahead by putting the first dedicated platform hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the road and into customers’ hands. A true testament to Honda’s pioneering spirit, the evolution of the FCX Clarity is a story filled with determination and brave, creative solutions to seemingly insurmountable obstacles. And it’s all driven by Honda’s sense of responsibility to pursue clean domestic energy sources that promise bluer skies for our children.
The midsize four-seat sedan, which runs on hydrogen and electricity, emits only water vapor and none of the gases believed to be responsible for global warming. Fuel cells produce electricity that can be used as a clean alternative to gasoline. The fuel cell stack in the FCX Clarity converts hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) into electricity. Ideally, water vapor is the only emission.
Honda says the vehicle offers two times better fuel efficiency than a gas-electric hybrid and three times that of a traditional petrol-powered vehicle.
One of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of wider adoption of fuel cell vehicles is cost and the lack of hydrogen fuelling stations.
Honda plans to lease 200 FCX Clarity vehicles in the U.S. and Japan over the next three years and has five customers for the car in the U.S., the company said in a statement.
The carmaker is adding low-pollution models including fuel-cell and gasoline-electric hybrids as record-high oil prices and tougher carbon-emission rules boost demand for cars that use less fuel.
