Smart use for QLD floodwater

The Queensland Department of Environment says millions of megalitres of floodwater has been recorded in Western Queensland this year, 30 times the volume of Sydney Harbour.
Downpours in January and February caused massive flooding in the Gulf and north-west river systems, flowing into the state’s south-west and then into South Australia’s Lake Eyre.

Lower Darling River contaminated

An outbreak of toxic blue-green algae has been confirmed in the Lower Darling River placing the area around Burtundy on a red level alert for algae.
The algae can cause gastroenteritis and skin and eye irritations and the water is unsuitable for recreation or domestic use and may also pose a threat to livestock.

Exploration of geothermal wells permit granted

Over the next five years $18 million will be spent by an exploration company trying to find geothermal water wells in western Victoria.
Hot Rock has been granted a permit by the State Government to explore the area stretching from Casterton to Clear Lake in order to build a power plant on.

Government urged to protect more of western Queensland

The National Parks Association of Queensland says the Queensland Government is not doing enough to protect areas west of the Great Dividing Range.
Association coordinator Paul Donatiu says less than 2 per cent of land beyond the Great Dividing Range is protected, while 13 per cent of south-east Queensland and the Cape York Peninsula is protected.

VIC government schools to audit water use

The Victorian Government is making it mandatory for all government schools to audit their water use in an attempt to reduce unnecessary water usage and encourage efficient water use habits.
Roughly 400 schools have voluntarily taken part in the schools water efficiency program and on average, they have cut their water use by 13 per cent.
